از وقایع تلخ مامایی سقط و مرگ جنین می باشد، تجربه تلخی که گاها بدون هیچ اخطاری در یک حاملگی اتفاق می افتد. براساس گزارشات موجود در ۴۰-۱۵ درصد موارد حاملگی، سقط جنین و در یک درصد حاملگیها مرگ جنین رخ می دهد. از آنجاییکه اختلالات ژنتیکی از علل مستعد کننده سقط و مرگ جنین می باشد و در ازدواج فامیلی امکان بروز بیماریهای ژنتیکی بیشتر می شود، بر آن شدیم مطالعه ای در مورد ارتباط بین ازدواج فامیلی و مرگ جنین و سرانجام بد حاملگی انجام دهیم. جهت نیل به این هدف مطالعه ای به روش توصیفی آینده نگر در سال ۱۳۷۰ انجام شد. بدین منظور ۵۸۸۵ زایمان که بعد از هفته ۲۰ حاملگی در زایشگاههای شهر تهران در طی ۱۵ شبانه روز انجام شده بود، مورد بررسی قرار گرفت .
